Vietnam born Scotty Nguyen is one of the most active players on the professional poker circuit, as well as one of the most financially successful. He is renowned for his sense of humour and for not taking himself or the game too seriously, not to mention his bad beat catchphrase ‘that’s poker baby’.
Scotty Nguyen Poker Celebrity & Career
Scotty Nguyen started playing poker several years after his family had relocated to California. He hit the poker tour for the first time in 1995. Nguyen had to wait three years before winning his first tournament, doing so in style by claiming the World Series of Poker Omaha Hi/Lo bracelet and $150,000 in prize money.
The following year, Scotty Nguyen exceeded even his own expectations by winning the main event at the 29th Annual World Series of Poker, claiming the first million dollar prize in the history of the event.
The final hand of that tournament made Scotty Nguyen famous. The dealer dealt a full house, and Nguyen turned to his opponent Kevin McBride saying ‘You call it’s gonna be all over baby.’ McBride, holding a full house, ignored this advice, called, and promptly lost out on a million dollars to Scotty Nguyen’s stronger full house.
Since claiming this famous win, Scotty Nguyen has been a major player in the World Series of Poker. He has four World Series of Poker bracelets to his name, with his win in 2000 his only main event win in the series to date.
Other notable wins have included taking a main event victory on the World Poker Tour, where he earned $969,000 by finishing first in the Goldstrike World Poker Open. Scotty Nguyen also claimed half a million dollars by finishing in 11th place in the main event of the 2007 World Series of Poker.
To date Scotty Nguyen has finished in the money over 150 times during his impressive career. This figure includes 30 first places finishes. To date Scotty Nguyen has won over $7,000,000 in his professional poker career.
Scotty Nguyen Profile: Playing Style
Scotty Nguyen is one of the most easily recognisable players in professional poker with his slicked back hair, expensive clothing and gold chains. He is also a distinctly colourful personality, who is known to comment on the action at the table up until the moment he wins. While he is well liked for his sense of humour, this tactic is often very effective in unsettling his opponents.
