Juan Carlos Mortensen, also known as ‘the Matador’, is Latin America’s most successful representative on the professional poker circuit. One of the biggest money winners of all time, Carlos Mortensen was not only the last professional poker player to win the main event at the World Series of Poker, but has continued winning consistently since taking poker’s biggest prize.
Carlos Mortensen Poker Celebrity & Career
Carlos Mortensen picked up his poker game in Spain, a country where poker is not only unpopular, but virtually illegal. He first came in contact with the game in 1997 at a private club where he worked as a bartender, and from the start proved to be an exceptionally talented player.
Having found his true calling Carlos Mortensen moved to the United States to develop his career as a professional player. He played in his first World Series of Poker event in 1999, faring poorly at the event, but managing to pick up some impressive wins in cash games.
He was back the following year, putting in a markedly improved performance to finish at the final table of the 2000 World Series of Poker main event. His dedication and persistence finally brought rewards in 2001 when he returned to the World Series of Poker, this time winning the main event to pocket the $1,500,000 prize.
Carlos Mortensen claimed his second WSOP bracelet in 2003, winning the Limit Hold ‘em event at the 34th Annual World Series of Poker. In 2006 he performed well again, making the final table in three events and earning himself a tidy pay-check of over $250,000.
Apart from his success at the World Series of Poker, Carlos Mortensen is also recognised as the most successful player on the World Poker Tour, having won the main event at the World Poker Tour on two occasions. He is also the only player ever to have won the main events at both the World Series of Poker and World Poker Tour.
Carlos Mortensen Profile: Playing Style
Carlos Mortensen does not go for the tight, hyper-aggressive playing style of many of his contemporaries on the poker tour. He instead relies on an adventurous, somewhat loose game that allows him to bluff and put together good hands on the flop.
Whilst Mortensen is known for his cool demeanour, he is loved by fans for his ability to put together complex chip-stack sculptures on the table as he plays.
